Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
There isn’t a sharp distinction between Counselling and psychotherapy, but Counselling tends to be shorter term and concerned with specific problems, while psychotherapy tends towards the longer term and the exploration of what underlies the way we are.
What does counselling and psychotherapy involve?
Counselling and psychotherapy are forms of treatment for psychological distress. Both involve talking to someone about yourself in complete confidence. The focus of the sessions may be to work through a particular crisis or problem. You might be exploring feelings of inner conflict or looking at ways of improving your relationships with others. The emphasis is on helping you to find your own answers and you will be listened to without judgement. What you want to achieve will be discussed at an initial meeting and an agreement made about commitment and fees. Usually, you would meet once a week for a 50-minute session, but this could vary according to need. Sometimes people choose to come more frequently.
In addition to individual Counselling or psychotherapy, some practitioners also offer couples Counselling, group work and supervision. Some practitioners offer courses for counsellors and psychotherapists, as well as courses of interest to the general public. Details of courses offered are listed under individual practitioner pages.
What does it cost?
Fees range from £25 to £50 per individual session. Fee levels for individual, couples, groups and courses are listed in the details of the individual practitioner pages. Trainees are able to offer reduced fees.
What is your training?
BCPC Counselling training leads to the award of a Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Counselling (minimum three years), which is a course recognized by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
The psychotherapy training leads to the award of a Diploma in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (minimum six years) which entitles registration with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Trainees may also work towards an MA in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (validated by Middlesex University) which runs alongside the Diploma

Any member of the public wishing to lodge a complaint should ask for a copy of the Complaints Procedure by contacting Simon Smart (details above) and address their concerns in writing to The Chair of Standards and Ethics, c/o the Executive Director at BCPC, 1 Walcot Terrrace, London Road, Bath, BA1 6AB
