Biography
I have been working as an integrative psychotherapist and counsellor in private practice for 20 years. My original qualification was in Social Work and spent I several years working for Social Services in the Mental Health field. I also worked for 2 years in hospice care and spent 3 years developing and piloting a counselling service for a number of inner-city GP practices in Bristol. In this context I learned the value of and developed an integrative approach to brief therapeutic interventions.
I was a member of the Core staff team at BCPC for nine years teaching on and developing the Psychotherapy training, and have been a Training supervisor since 1996. I continue to supervise BCPC trainees as well as other qualified counselling and psychotherapy practitioners. For several years I co-led and developed a series of therapeutic groups and workshops for men, and my interest and experience in groupwork as a medium for change has continued through my teaching and through working with a variety of groups in organisations. I combine understandings from both Group Analytic and humanistic sources in my approach to groupwork.
My current practice ranges from seeing people fortnightly to 3x weekly depending on the range and severity of difficulties presented. I work mostly with adults in individual therapy and over the years have experience of working with a broad range of psychological problems and states of distress. There seems currently to be an emphasis on categorising symptoms and delineating specialist approaches and techniques to deal with these. Whilst these can sometimes prove helpful I work from the basis that most personal difficulties arise in the context of relationships, both past and present, and that it is by exploring these difficulties through the medium of the relationship with the therapist that growth, healing and resolution may occur.
