Biography

I trained in psychotherapy with bcpc.
I have considerable experience of working with people who have suffered from trauma and PTSD having worked with refugees for the past five years. I have undertaken training in the use of EMDR. “Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing”. This is a treatment derived from the discovery, in 1987 , that disturbing thoughts change with certain eye movements or other forms of rhythmic stimulation. It is not known exactly how EMDR works but it activates the brain’s information processing system, causing intrusive thoughts and flashbacks to become simple memories that are free from emotion overlay.

As well as helping people suffering from PTSD (post trauamatic stress disorder) it is useful for people who have been involved in or witnessed an accident or crime. I also work short or long term with people facing difficulties or depression in their lives. There may be a specific difficulty or general dissatisfaction and lack of meaning or joi de vivre in their lives.

My previous career in the NHS has given me the experience of working with people who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness and I am also interested in working with professionals such as doctors, nurses and social workers who have responsibilities which may lead to burn out. I was a founder member of Cotswold Counselling Centre and served on the management committee for some years. I have been a supervisor for Cruse Bereavement Care and am now lead psychotherapist for GARAS (Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers)

Marina normally works on the first floor but can use a ground floor room if necessary. She also offers negotiable fees for those receiving state benefit.
